Kelp powder

Postby rpvr » Sun Jun 19, 2016 4:53 am

Just wondering if anyone has used kelp powder as a nutritional supplement for tortoises? It contains many trace elements and would seem on face value to be useful. I have tried it in very small amounts dusted over food as an addition to the usual calcium carbonate, and they don't object to it at all. I would just like to be sure that there is nothing in it that is likely to be detrimental.

One concern I would have it the high iodine content - very little data on how tortoises would handle this, long term.

Thanks Andy. I guess my decision is now to not use it at all, or to try really miniscule amounts. NZ soil is deficient in iodine compared to many parts of the world, which is why I thought it may have a benefit. Goitre caused by iodine deficiency was very prevalent in the human population in NZ until we were advised to use iodised salt in cooking back in the 1930s-40s.

I would think, then, in that case a small amount would be fine.
