Halogen bulbs to be withdrawn

Postby Stuart » Tue Aug 18, 2015 11:06 am

I've just posted the following in the basking light thread, but thought I might open a new thread with it too:

According to a Radio 4 item yesterday, domestic halogen bulbs are due to be phased out in favour of LED bulbs, either as early as 2016, or possibly delayed until 2018. (See: http://conversation.which.co.uk/energy- ... gy-saving/ ) Apparently IKEA are leading the way ahead of the withdrawal of halogen bulbs by already selling only LED bulbs. These are considered to be very efficient in that they give off virtually no heat.

Meanwhile I'm still using incandescent bulbs: reptile keepers need bulbs that provide both light and heat.

At the moment, fortunately some tungsten spotbulbs are still available. Used in combination with fluorescent UV tubes, I rely on these: http://www.homebase.co.uk/en/homebaseuk ... ack-788278 (although I use the 120W versions).

I'm dreading the day when they are withdrawn (it will surely come) - because then I'll be entirely in the hands of the manufacturers and retailers of "specialist" bulbs (if the EU allows it, of course) which will no doubt be even more expensive than these currently are (usually £6.99 each, and never lasting the "year" they're supposed to, since they're on 12-14 hours a day)

Yes. Apparently some 'special purpose' incandescent and halogen will still be sold, but as with anything 'special' I am sure the price will go up!

We moved house recently. Kitchen lights were Par38 spots, heavy things in a track, more like you'd see on a catering counter!

They left us box of spare bulbs too! Planning on using couple in new enclosure but have some spare if needed Stuart.
