See the housing section for description of suitable accommodation. There are good ideas there, and a discussion of some of the problems to be overcome.

I am a primary school teacher who wants to introduce tortoises as school pets.
I am aware that I have to have an indoor and outdoor housing set up before being able to apply for a pair of tortoises to rehome. However, I wonder if you could let me know if you would consider a school to be an appropriate rehoming body. I would be responsible for keeping the animals at home during the holidays. The school has agreed to cover all the vet, housing, feeding and other costs as necessary. I have had a tortoise in the past which now lives happily with my grandmother so I know a bit about taking care of them. Obviously, I would consult specialists regarding the animals before settling them in the school.

What is your view on a school adopting two Hermann's tortoises?
Many thanks, Bea
