Quarantine Requirements.

Before you apply for any Tortoises listed in this section, you must be prepared to carry out a 'MINIMUM' of 18 months quarantine period, longer if possible.
If you can not provide a quarantine period, then please do not apply for Tortoises that are listed.
The quarantine period is vital. This will enable you to monitor the health of any new Tortoise incase there are underlying problems that we do not know about. Hand washing, not stepping from enclosure to enclosure, no area to be used where another Tortoise has had access. Do not share food/water dishes that are or have been used by another Tortoise (this includes placing the same bucket of food down in different enclosures). Using different bathing facilities for each Tortoise. Do not swap cuttlefish around that has been used by another Tortoise. You must consider every possibility where cross contamination can happen. Even down to using gardening tools for tidying enclosures, use seperate ones for each enclosure. Do you pick up a Tortoise and hold it close to you, against your clothing, then put it down and then pick up a different species and do the same? Cross contamination is a serious issue that needs addressing otherwise you are risking the health of your Tortoises. Deal with one species, one enclosure at a time. Do not mix different species of Tortoise. Different species carry different Pathogens which can be detrimental to each Species.

What can happen if you fail to do this...

Do not ever think this cannot affect your animals. It can - as many know to their cost.

This topic is sadly lacking in many 'new' groups popping up, especially Face Book ones.

I will be linking this thread,

I am on some of the FB ones, so sad to see what are obviously poorly torts with MBD and reading comments like "wow a really pretty shell" or posting videos of torts walking round almost dragging their back legs and people posting how funny it is to watch. I have found one person on there so far who seems to know what she is talking about!! And of course Nise from Reptile Rescue.
Regards,

Ali
