Holiday care

Postby amelia1730 » Thu Mar 23, 2017 3:25 pm

Desperate to find holiday care for my Hermanns in June. We are in Cambridgeshire but willing to travel. I have no friends or family close by and neighbours unsuitable (don't ask!). My Mil usually helps but she's coming away with us.Yes, I know, bad move!!
Any suggestions please?
Thank you

Hi Ali
Sorry, only just seen your post. Been ill.

Horace is a male Hermanns. Approx 60 yrs old according to vet so fully grown but not huge as you can imagine being a Hermanns!
He 's quite a character. :D
I have searched for specialist boarding but not found anything.

Hi Amelia

I have a hermanns too and know how difficult it can be when you are not home to find cover. It is not like having a dog which can go into doggy kennels. Plus tortoises don't travel light!

I found help by contacting a local vet. They often have a list of people who advertise as pet carers some of which are prepared to house sit while you are away and look after your loved ones. It may be worth a try and then you can see if you like any of them.

Hi Ali and Emily

Sorry for lack of response to your messages. Haven't been on for a while and don't seem to get notifications, assuming there is such a thing on here!

I have found somewhere down in Hertfordshire at Tortoise b n b. It's on Facebook if interested. The person who runs it seems very aware of general husbandry, cross infection risks, feeding advice etc She works at the local vet. It is my only option really. At least I know he will be safe and secure for the week. Bit of a trek down from Cambs and back to drop him off (twice) with all his luggage! Your right Emily - they don't travel light. My neighbours are not suitable for various reasons and as I said before MIL is coming away with us so can't fulfill her usual duties! It will not happen again!!

I must admit I hadn't thought to ask at the vet.

Thank you Ali for kindly offering to help.

The reason I came on here today was to check for a lost tortoise in North Hertfordshire. Tortoise b n b lady mentioned it on FB. It isn't microchipped. Can't see anything on here but will keep an eye open.

Update on my holiday care experience at Tortoise B and B
Please see previous post about holiday care. I'm too lazy to write it all again!
Hope this helps someone else.
Once again Ali, it was kind of you to offer to help.
