Urgent Product Safety Alert - Geko brand vivariums

Postby Tortoise Trust » Sat Aug 08, 2009 6:50 pm

As you know, we are presently testing a range of products to assess their suitability to house tortoises.

As part of this process we recently purchased a vivarium manufactured in China and sold in the UK by http://www.gekozone.co.uk and via Ebay.

One part of our testing process involves checking products for not only animal, but human safety.

We are so concerned at what we found when checking the Geko vivarium that first thing on Monday morning we will be contacting Trading Standards.

The lamp fixture supplied is an all metal/ceramic design. We found an insufficient length of heat resistant shielding within the fixture, meaning that bare, hot metal could potentially contact the live 230v lines. In addition, we found that the FUSE FITTED IN THE PLUG WAS RATED AT 13 AMPS when it SHOULD BE RATED AT 3 AMPS. The fitting is also in direct contact with a flammable surface.

This could result in both fires and electrocution.

If you have one of these, we would advise disconnecting it immediately and getting it checked by a competent, qualified electrician.

I have had a call to say that someone going to the west midlands reptile society show in kidderminster thinks that this company Geko ,will be there. I am probably going to pop over there to try and get some photos of what is going on. The problem is I will have to try and keep my mouth shut, which will be hard especially if the animals are suffering in any way.
Does anyone know if the RSPCA will be in attendance? Linda

1. Incorrect fuse rating fitted. For a 60w lamp it should be 3A, not 13A.
2. The cable clamp is not being used at all, putting strain on the terminals.

1. Heat resistant sheath too short. Cable is in direct contact with hot metal. If this degrades the entire metal fixture could become 'live'. In addition, metal edges are badly finished with sharp edges, contributing to the problem.
2. This lamp is supposed to be fixed to a flammable surface. It is going to get VERY hot. I will know exactly how hot soon.

1. NO instructions whatever supplied.
2. NO current (wattage) rating to be found.

" INSTRUCTIONS. Where the safe use of the equipment relies upon the user being aware of any
particular characteristic, suitable information or instruction booklets should be provided. The
instructions should be given in English. " (Electrical Safety Regulations, 1994)

Here's some examples of other unsafe electrical equipment:

This is the actual manufacturer:

The UK based Gekozone is merely an importer/brander.

This is the actual vivarium being sold by Gekozone for tortoises:

A full test is in the process of being carried out.....

Oh, wow. That truly could burn someone's home down-or worse-

I lookd over the product list for this company, and there are a LOT of things I would never, EVER consider using around animals.
After the extensive involvement I had regarding the Chinese melamine/pet food recall a couple of years ago, don't believe for a minute that what they state is in substrates, etc is what's actually in there...it could be ground up asbsetos for all you know! (Exaggerating, but you get the point I'm sure...)

As we say here over the pond, "Buy American." In this case-buy British!!

Hi Annie,

Watch out for this in the US too, as they will stick any label on it for an importer. It may be sold under any brand name as a 'flat pack' or 'self-assembly' vivarium. Believe me - it gets worse. The lamp was also factory wired with REVERSE POLARITY so merely changing the lamp could easily get you electrocuted!

Absolutely shocking, in the true sense of the word.

We need to get word out to all reptile lists about this thing. They are selling them for snakes/lizards too.

Andy

This is really alarming and I am grateful that you have brought this to everyone's attention.

I hope Trading Standards take this very seriously and prevent an accident from happening.

Andy I showed this to Dave as you can imagine he wasn't best impressed!!!!!!
It's disgusting what is out there for the unsuspecting public. Let's hope it gets banned. Am I right in assuming the importers would be held responsible in the UK?

ANYONE selling it is liable. Either new, used, trade or retail.

Max penalty is a fine of £5,000 and six months behind bars.
