Deep Freeze Alert!

Postby Tortoise Trust » Fri Feb 03, 2012 6:45 pm

Very low temperatures tonight right across Europe (-12 possible in UK, -3 to -7 even here, in Spain). BE CAREFUL WITH HIBERNATING TORTOISES, ESPECIALLY ANY THAT ARE IN SHEDS, OUTBUILDINGS OR ATTICS.

See updated "Safer Hibernation" for more details.

During the freezing cold winter of 1982 my spur thighed male Tommy hibernated in the garden himself, there was about 3 inches of soil above him. The temp never rose above freezing for the whole of December, in the spring out he came, right as rain. He is still going strong, eating us out of house and home!

That is why the notice referred specifically to "sheds, outbuildings or attics".

Tortoises in those locations are far more vulnerable to frost damage than those hibernating under ground.
