Shell damage?

Postby DawnQ » Tue Sep 03, 2019 6:36 pm

Does anyone have any suggestions what may be happening to the shell? We’re new to tortoise keeping so not really sure ourselves (it’s a rescue). I’m off to a vet tomorrow (miles from home as difficult to find one dealing with exotics locally, although they’re not a tortoise specialist ) & would like to have a few ideas as would hate to be told the wrong thing.
Many thanks

Could be several things here...

First thought is burn damage from being too close to hot basking lamps (quite common, unfortunately).

Second possibility is a fungal or bacterial shell infection. We have some notes on this on our main site.

Thank you for that Andy. We took her to a vet who supposedly had a “special interest in tortoises. This obviously isn’t so as she gave her a clean bill of health although we said we were concerned about her shell. We’ve been cleaning her shell & using chlorexidine on the affected areas (well hibiscrub as that was all I could get in a hurry) & it’s looking a bit better- unfortunately after her bath this morning I noticed more damage on the plastron. One side scrubbed away quite easily but the other side lifted up but stayed put but seemed quite a deep cavity underneath . I was too apprehensive to pull it off but am anxious thar the anti bac solution won’t reach underneath enough. I’ve taken her bathing dish out of the ttable but left the water dish in, although she has a habit of sitting in that too (I’m assuming I should keep underneath of shell as dry as poss)
Without access to a competent vet she I’m at a loss to know what to do for the best. Will the shell just gradually come off now I’ve started it?
Any advice/pointers would be gratefully received.

I would gently remove any loose/flaking pieces, and scrub with a fairly strong solution of povidone-iodine, then rinse. Keep under observation. If the areas continue to expand/spread them you will need to locate another vet.
