Identification of tortoises

Postby Sue Doxat » Tue Jul 11, 2017 11:31 am

I realise there are individual differences and difficult to identify species sometimes, but wonder if you could post images or comments to help distinguish between a few of the more commonly kept tortoises to help with identifying the differences.
Am I correct in thinking a marginated tortoise has a longer shaped carapace and the only type with marginal flares and these are more pronounced in males?
Is Herman's the only one with a hook on its tail, I've read horsfields also have a smaller hooked tip.
The horsfield may not have the four ties attributed to its species, but do other species have four ties?.
Which of the species has a hinged plastron or divided scutes?
