Just to add that I very strongly agree with your position Andy (and Paul!).

Also, it seems to me that the collection, keeping, transport and release of European Testudo species is questionable legally, given their status as 'European Protected Species' under the 1992 EU 'Habitats' Directive and their CITES listings.

When you look at the regional variation in, say, Testudo graeca populations in Morocco (see Taxonomy section) it should be self evident why you cannot just take a load of "Testudo graeca" and just release them anywhere.... they may turn out to be totally different species. We just do not know enough to mess with this yet. It is absolutely crazy to do releases in areas where we have such a poor knowledge of what is already there. You could make highly endangered, but presently unknown, species extinct doing that. It is utter stupidity on a monumental scale. To continue doing so, when you have been told this by multiple specialists is beyond stupid and verging into criminal environmental vandalism - in my opinion.

With admission, that Captive animals have been repatriated by CARAPAX to countries within the EU, what legal framework would they have used to undertake this action?

When the legal position is finaly known please post.
A number of us have written privately to the authorities, if anyone gets a response it would also be good to know. I for one have had no acknowledgement.

Since EU funds are involved in this, it just might be worth letting our own (UK) MEP's know what is going on. The question of whether any EU funds should be used to support counter-productive activities like this is surely a matter of general concern.

Given the result of the court case yesterday it will be interesting to see what happens next....

(Carapax appear to have lost the long-running court case over their use of the site and now face eviction).

Andy

Excuse me if I have missed this - are there animals at the site they are being evicted from?

One would hope that acceptable arrangements are made for any displaced animals..... perhaps some of the people involved in placing them there could take responsibility and play a role in funding a more satisfactory solution.
